Cooling Tower Wastewater Recovery and Treatment

Cooling towers are designed to dissipate heat by evaporating water. They ensure efficient processes and long equipment service lives.

In the cooling tower, the circulating cooling water is constantly concentrated. During the evaporation process, the salt content continues to increase, so a part of the circulating water must be discharged frequently, and fresh water must be added to maintain a certain salinity.

The circulating cooling process is essentially the concentration process of cooling tower wastewater. The circulating cooling water is concentrated due to blow-off, evaporation, etc., so the pollutant factor in the cooling tower water increases exponentially.

Cooling tower wastewater recovery and treatment are particularly important in this process. If cooling tower water is not treated, scaling, fouling, and corrosion can reduce plant productivity, cause plant downtime, and require expensive equipment replacement at a later stage.

Cooling towers common applications include cooling refineries, petrochemical and other chemical plants, thermal power plants, nuclear power plants, etc.

Various Cooling Tower Wastewater Solutions and Products

▪ Intake Screens

Our wedge wire intake screens protect pumps and other equipment from debris and contaminants in the cooling tower wastewater.

Tee intake screens are commonly used in cooling plants, pulp and paper mills, and other industrial facilities that need to draw large amounts of water from lakes, rivers, or oceans.

▪ Wedge Wire Filters for Ion Exchange

Ion exchange systems often remove specific ions like calcium and magnesium that cause scaling in cooling tower systems. It can effectively reduce the potential for scaling.

We custom design wedge wire hub and header laterals, resin traps, and filter nozzles for ion exchanges in cooling tower systems.

▪ Vessel Internals

We provide vessel internals for cooling tower wastewater recovery and treatment, including rector scallops, support grids, and media retention nozzles

▪ Self-cleaning Filters

Self-cleaning filters are an effective solution for cooling tower wastewater treatment: high self-cleaning function, anti-clogging, and high efficiency.

Case Study: Cooling Tower Wastewater Recovery in Power Plants

Power plants are among the largest consumers of water for cooling purposes. A large power plant cooling tower can consume millions of gallons of water daily. To address water scarcity and comply with environmental regulations, many power plants are investing in advanced wastewater recovery systems.

For example, a coal-fired power plant in the U.S. implemented wedge wire filters and vessel internals for its cooling tower blowdown. The plant was able to recover 95% of the water, significantly reducing its reliance on freshwater resources. The remaining 5% of wastewater was concentrated into solid waste that was safely disposed of, allowing the plant to meet stringent discharge regulations while lowering its water usage.
